Woah! Can You Say Too Many Seeds?

Now that January is here its time to start the new year off right. I spent last month drooling over seed catalogues but have yet to order any seeds. I thought I better look at my seed stash first so I didn’t double up on my orders.

Oh my! Hubby brought in two boxes of seeds. No wonder I waited so long to look at them. I had a daunting task ahead of me. Last year I had two children’s school garden programs going and I helped to run a community garden.I was always using seeds for some project or another and wasn’t always so good at putting them back the way they should go.  It was time to get to work. The Ladner Seedy Saturday is on February 9 and I hoped to donate some seeds to the seed swap.

I had started out sorting them alphabetically and hoped to arrange all the seeds appropriately once again. I think I have enough beans seed to feed my whole community! From bush beans to dry beans and pole beans, I have them all. I even have some heritage beans from the 1800’s. I must plant them this year as they have quite the history to them.

Broken packages of seeds were distributed into small envelopes. I will take these to Seedy Saturday for the seed swap. I clearly marked the name of the plant, the year the seed was from and how many are in the package. I don’t know about you but I rarely use a whole package of seeds. I just don’t need 50 bean seeds so why not share with someone else who does?

Well, I finally finished doing the seed inventory. As you can see I have lots to share. This supply would feed us for years to come. Guess what, I never got into the big blue container of seeds. I peeked inside to find all sorts of unlabeled poppy seeds, columbine seeds and much more. I have a big urge to just sprinkle them throughout the garden and see what happens or perhaps dump them into my almost finished compost. Do I need to buy more seeds? Probably not, but how do I resist the new emerald wine basil or the sweet potato plants I saw in the catalogues? If I grow the food to give it away, does that count as a good excuse?  That’s just what I will do.
