Ladner Welcomes a New Community Garden

I visited the new community garden at the Ladner United Church a couple of weeks ago. Its been quite awhile since I sat and met with the committee working on this new project. We finally have a second community garden in town and this one is right in the town center. It’s so important to have a community garden in a central location. ¬†Even though there is transit nearby, if you are coming to work on your community garden bed its hard to carry plants and tools with you on public transportation. Having tools on site makes it work for everyone. The proximity to the downtown core makes this garden seen more often than one tucked away.

The new community garden is at the Ladner United Church at the back. Raised beds are at staggered heights to suit individual gardener’s needs . The garden is surrounded by landscaping done by the developer of the adjoining property. When town homes were being proposed behind the church they worked with the developer to add this tiny green space.

All the gardens are planted with a mix of vegetables and flowers. Above is a wedding garden planted by the minister’s family. I love the all white theme for this garden. The church added a large patio at the back so members can sit and enjoy the view of the garden.

I love to see what people grow in their gardens. Everyone has their favourites that they love to grow each year. It’s no sense growing food your family will not eat. One raised bed in this garden has been planted by a homeless family with the help of volunteers. It gives them a place to come and relax. The church is home for our emergency shelter so this family knows it well.

I love how seating was added so one can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee while in the garden. A garden is often a healing place or one where we can shed the stresses of the day. I look forward to seeing this garden mature over the years.

There is a real  need for more community garden space as we see more densification in our community. The Ladner Community Garden has a wait list for 2017 and I will bet the Ladner United Community Garden has one too.
