Farmer Jim and I were walking around our hometown of Ladner a couple of days ago doing some Christmas shopping. I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful the city plantings are this fall. The corner of each block has a large aggregate container that is filled with seasonal flowers and shrubs. The one above uses a purple-leaved grass as its center plant and is surrounded by ferns, Heuchera, ornamental kale and cabbage. These planters can be seen in the historic part of downtown Ladner. This historic area is also known for the filing of Supernatural and the X-Files. Many of the buildings in this area predate back to the 1930’s.
The colour in this planter is so vibrant. It makes me think of spring when I see it. The golden cedar the center is flanked with Nandina and ferns and more ornamental cabbage.
At the far end of town is this planter with a mix of cedar and juniper. The golden-leaved plants look like boxwood but I can’t be sure. There is also a very thick leaved evergreen in the containers I haven’t seen before. I must find out what it is. Violas bloom all winter here as our temperatures are mild.
This is a closeup of the two mystery plants. The green one on the left has almost a waxy feel to its thick leaves. I love the way it has a purple tinge to its leaves and contrasts so well with the ornamental kale.
This is a nice combination and will last all winter long. Way to go Corporation of Delta! The gardens always look lovely here.
