Fertilizer Friday- January

I can’t believe it’s already Friday! I havent joined Tootsie Time for a while as I have been so busy working on the Ladner Seedy Saturday. Hubby took a few pictures of the yard for me yesterday and it’s not pretty. It been nothing but days of endless rain until today. The sun is out but it’s just below freezing and the ground has been iced with a layer of frost. I love the way the sun captures the frost on the edges of trees and shrubs. It just sparkles.

The rain that came two days ago left us with our own lake in the yard. Luckily it has disappeared over the last couple of days. Those large cedars sure don’t like wet feet.

chilukathan sloughThe waterway behind us is fast moving and the water is high this week.

The greenhouse is where things are growing. I am babysitting a Meyers lemon tree, overwintering a few Pelargoniums, a passion flower and some succulents in the greenhouse. It’s a cool greenhouse with a small heater keeping it about 5C inside. The seed flats are all lined up and ready to be planted next month.

There isn’t a lot of colour in the yard except that provided by what I call the bones of the garden, the evergreens. This is Skimmia with its tiny red flowers.

The Rhododendrons abound in this garden. At last count there were about 39 Rhododendrons and Azaleas and that’s enough for this gardener. This winter we left all the leaves on the gardens. This has led to some funny antics from the birds. They grab an oak leaf and toss it over their shoulders just to get at the worms and bugs. When you see half a dozen birds tossing leaves this way and that it is almost comical.

DSC02110Lots of green in the garden but not a lot of colour so let’s look at what is blooming inside.

I love Amaryllis and these bloomed just after the new year. The red one is Amaryllis ‘Red Lion’ and grew very tall.

My favourite is Amaryllis ‘Apple Blossom’ and by far my favourite. Well that’s about it for today. It won’t be long for spring as the Crocuses are starting to send their shoots up through the soil.

  1. It’s been a great year for Amaryllis. The reason I like ‘Apple Blossom’ is the fragrance. Anything this beautiful should smell good, too.
